Loco Por La Aventura

A 2020 Center for American Progress report found that 74 percent of communities of color in the contiguous United States live in nature-deprived areas, compared with 23 percent of white communities. Loco Por La Aventura works on that gap in Portland. Since 2020 it has taken Spanish-speaking Latinos hiking, climbing, camping and canoeing, and it puts every dollar from its gear store and rentals back into its mission, keeping costs low and sometimes free. As of October 2026, its website reports leading 1,912 people outside across 62 events and classes the year before.^{1, 2, 3}

Wildland Firefighter Foundation

Four firefighters died working the Gore and Knowles fires in Colorado in the summer of 2026, and in July a helicopter pilot was killed fighting the Gold Mountain fire near Ouray. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation shows up for families like theirs, helping with funeral and medical costs at the moment a household has lost both a person and a paycheck.^{1, 2, 3, 4}

The Innocence Project

DNA testing has helped clear more than 600 wrongly convicted people in the U.S. since 1989, over 200 of them Innocence Project clients. The Project takes on wrongful-conviction cases and pays for the testing, which can cost $5,000 to $50,000 a case.¹

Community Solutions International

U.S. homelessness hit a record 771,480 people in 2024, and Community Solutions’ analysis suggests the count leveled off the year after. The group helps more than 160 communities keep a list of homeless people by name, updated monthly, because you cannot fix a problem you cannot count.¹

Communities in Schools

The share of U.S. students missing a tenth or more of the school year nearly doubled between 2018 and 2022, to 28 percent. Communities in Schools puts site coordinators inside schools, working every day to make sure students are present and ready to learn.^{1, 2}

Coalition of Oregon Land Trusts

In 2026 Oregon lawmakers passed H.B. 4134, raising the state's transient lodging tax from 1.5 to 2.75 percent starting in 2027, which will put about $38 million a year into fish, wildlife and habitat. Money like that takes someone speaking up for conservation in state policy, and the Coalition of Oregon Land Trusts does that for Oregon's land trusts.^{1, 2, 3}

Direct Relief

The war that began with strikes inside Iran on February 28, 2026, left health systems in affected areas short of fuel and medicine, and flight cancellations delayed the cargo routes that aid normally travels on. We gave to Direct Relief because it was already there: in the year before the war, it delivered more than $100 million in medical aid and grants to health partners across the Middle East and neighboring countries, and it keeps medical supplies stocked in the region.¹

Colorectal Cancer Alliance

Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in U.S. adults under 50, and three in four cases in that age group are caught late. Screening is recommended starting at 45, but only 37 percent of people aged 45 to 49 have had it. The Colorectal Cancer Alliance works on both: getting people screened on time and standing beside the ones already diagnosed.^{1, 2}

The Dougy Center for Grieving Children & Families

The Dougy Center, the world's first peer grief support program for children, has been helping grieving children in Portland since 1982. It serves more than 2,500 children, teens, young adults and caregivers a year, and none of that help costs a family anything.^{1, 2}
